YORK'S Parliament Street fountain will be gone within a fortnight, after council bosses announced work would start on Monday.

The decision to get rid of the fountain was confirmed in April and from Monday workers will start removing the structure and relaying the stone around it.

Cllr Peter Dew, executive member for planning, who approved the removal, said: “We had to make this decision because the fountain has been out of action for a number of years and is now beyond repair. We are determined to make sure that this area continues to serve as a focal point in our city centre, and I look forward to receiving the proposals soon.” A temporary floral display will go up in its place while proposals are drawn up for the site’s long term future.
