RUSSIA and China are working to develop deadly new hypersonic missiles, capable of flying faster than 3,100 miles per hour, which can break through modern defences in a major threat to US security.
It comes as the US’s own hypersonic missiles programme could be put on hold after the Trump administration slashed the defence budget.
China claimed to have successfully tested a hypersonic combat aircraft, called Starry Sky-2, in August of this year.
Chinese state media claim the aircraft is capable of travelling at up to 4,563 miles per hour.
Russia, China and the US are currently the world leaders for military hypersonic technology.
An aircraft travelling at such a speech would be able to penetrate any currently available missile defence system.
It is understood the aircraft should be able to fire nuclear warheads upon completion.
Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert, claimed the development shows China is “advancing shoulder to shoulder with the US and Russia”.
However, there are growing concerns the US’s own hypersonic weapons programme could be put on hold.
