Punter put a £7,000 stake on the Monaco vs Dortmund match at 21/10 odds
A MAN thought he had won £21,000 on a football bet - only to be told the bookies would not be paying out.
The 25-year-old, who did not want to be named, put a £7,000 stake on Monaco to win against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
Listed as 21/10 odds the bet had a return of £21,700 which the man, from Wirral, said he hoped to use to buy a house.
However when he went to log into his account to claim his winnings he said it was locked.
He claims he rang up Paddy Power who told him that they had cancelled his bet at 5.30pm - two and a half hours before the 8pm kick off - because he had exceeded a £4,000 bet limit.
The furious punter hit out at Paddy Power and said they should either never have accepted his bet or told him they had cancelled it.
He said: “I had won money earlier in the week and just thought I would go for it.
“I am trying to buy a house at the moment and there is one I like but it is more money than I have, so I thought I would put this bet on.
“When I rang up to put it on everything was fine and they didn’t say anything about me exceeding my limit.
“But then when I was locked out my account and rang up they said they had cancelled it and my win was void.
“They had more than two hours to tell me that they had cancelled my bet but they didn’t.
The man, who said he is waiting to be refunded on his £7,000 stake, said he is hoping to hear from management regarding the situation but said he “doesn’t think they will pay out.”
A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “We have a strict policy of not commenting on individual customer accounts.”
