Rickie Fowler's excellent 65 led the way on day one at the US Open, as two of the world's best golfers had nightmare experiences around Erin Hills.

While Fowler took a one-shot lead from Paul Casey and Xander Schauffele after the first round in Wisconsin, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day were cut well adrift.

McIlroy's driving was erratic as he carded a six-over 78, while Day was a shot further back.

Having a really bad Day

June 16, 2017 1:13 AM

Meanwhile, someone calling himself Jason Day has overshot the green on the ninth and will find it tough to make par from there.

A long day for Diaz

June 16, 2017 1:13 AM

A birdie on the last leaves Bernd Weisberger with a 69 for the day.

Leishman in trouble

June 16, 2017 1:12 AM

Si Woo Kim's excellent rally down the back nine sees him end with a birdie to card a 69. He's four off the lead.

Casey finishes in 66

June 16, 2017 1:12 AM

Fowler's two-shot lead is now a one-shot lead. What a fantastic afternoon it's been for Casey, who knocks in a birdie from five feet on the last to finish six under.

Seven on four for Day

June 16, 2017 1:12 AM

Garcia's fellow Spaniard, Jon Rahm finished with a 76 - four over par - and not many would have put money on that before play today.

Another McIlroy bogey

June 16, 2017 1:12 AM

Marc Leishman carded a 68 earlier today.'It feels great to be four under par in any US Open, in any round. I didn't drive at my best but my short game and putting kept me in it,' he said, reflecting on his round.'You're always going to have bogeys in US Opens but I'm really happy with only having one.'

Els stays at four under

June 16, 2017 1:12 AM

Easy! Easy! Ernie 'Big Easy' Els rolls in a 12-footer for par on the 15th. That'll keep him at four under.'The fans are loving this round,' says Butch Harmon in that famous Butch Harmon lilt. Yes we are, Butch. Yes we are.

Casey on form

June 16, 2017 1:12 AM

We could still have a joint or even a new leader tonight. Schauffele drains his short-range putt on seven - his 16th - to go to six under.

Fleetwood off to a flyer

June 16, 2017 1:11 AM

This is not confirmed as yet, but the video below appears to show that a blimp over Erin Hills, which was taking aerial images of the tournament, has caught fire and crashed to earth, with its occupants parachuting down to ground. Let's hope no-one is hurt. Will bring you more information when it is available.

Rory struggling

June 16, 2017 1:11 AM

McIlroy goes wild off the tee again. It's not a hook this time but he's gone quite a way right down the 15th and this very birdie-able hole now looks pretty daunting.

Kim goes round in 69

June 16, 2017 1:11 AM

Andrew 'Beef' Johnston has come away with a 69 today.'I hit my irons lovely, the putter was pretty good, I just need to drive a bit better,' he said, reflecting on his round.'I think (the fescue rough) is fair because it's a long way off line but once you're in it you just have to accept you're getting the lob wedge out.'

More trouble for Johnson

June 16, 2017 1:11 AM

It is apparently a TV blimp sponsored by PenFed Credit Union.

Beef drops a shot

June 16, 2017 1:11 AM

Lee Westwood enjoyed a solid start to the US Open with a first-round 69.'I'm really pleased. I played great and missed one fairway and one green. It will get progressively trickier as the week goes on, I would imagine,' he said.'The greens dry out, firm out, quicken up and that's what makes things difficult.'I'm hitting the ball well and straight and long. There's no reason why I shouldn't keep playing like this and being in contention come Sunday'

Birdie for Beef

June 16, 2017 1:11 AM

'It was still tough. I had to hit fairways, that was goal and the key going out. I've been swinging well all week - Butch (Harmon, his coach) and I got right a little tune-up I was able to take that and run with it. We tightened things up.'I'm in a great spot mentally, physically as well.'The gameplan was just drive it well. These fairways are wider than a typical Open but there is even more of a premium to hitting the fairways. The fescue and bunkers you don't want to be getting into.'

Double bogey for Johnson

June 16, 2017 1:10 AM

But it's bad news for the man who beat Spieth to the Green Jacket last year. Danny Willett is seven over par through 12, joint last with Horschel.

Na hits a 68

June 16, 2017 1:09 AM

Two interesting names making progress up the leaderboard. Xander Schauffele sinks a dribbling right to left to go to four under on 13 and he's joined by AMATEUR Cameron Champ - obviously a ready-made winner.

The Dunne thing

June 16, 2017 1:09 AM

Rahm drains a much-needed birdie putt of his own from 16 feet, but he's got to find more fairways and greens - his long game has been all over the place.

Garcia goes round in 70

June 16, 2017 1:08 AM

Oh, Rory. It's happened again. He's driving terribly. This time he's gone right off the tee at 17 and is back in the fescue rough. Nightmare.

Spieth slumps

June 16, 2017 1:07 AM

It's all been very quiet from the Golden Child today after that birdie on his second hole. He's given that shot back again on the fourth hole, his 13th, after coming up short with his approach. 'Oh Jordan' comes the cry. Johnson manages to save par, however, from a similar position.

Evening all

June 16, 2017 1:07 AM

Rory McIlroy will tee off for his first round later today and he's been chatting to Sky Sports.'I'm, just excited to be here and play. I feel like I'm playing catch-up a little bit but it's been a while since I've been at a tournament and just enjoyed being here,' he said.'Everything I've seen in practice has been good. It always shows up stuff when you're under the gun in competition. I'm not coming in with low expectations but I'll feel it through the first few holes and see how it goes.'The USGA usually give us a great challenge. By the end of this week, the course will show its teeth.'

Leishman to five under

June 16, 2017 1:07 AM

Beeeeeeeeeeeef! Johnston rattles in a 20-footer for another birdie on the eighth. He's bounced back from that first-hole bogey as if attached to a trampoline. Two under and a smile stitched to his face.

Leishman making ground

June 16, 2017 1:07 AM

What a hit from McIlroy. He whips out the big dog on 2 and launches his ball high and straight at the green. It rolls up the steep bank guarding the putting surface and he's the first man I've seen drive this green today. Casey looks a little surprised to see a ball suddenly appear in front of him as he lines up a putt. Er, shouldn't someone be there telling them not to hit yet?

Leishman to four under

June 16, 2017 1:07 AM

Even by his standards, this is some display of ballstriking. This time he follows up a ripsnorting drive of 325 yards with a dead-eyed wedge to five feet.

McIlroy double bogeys 17

June 16, 2017 1:06 AM

McIlroy is going to have to play his second shot to the 17th out of the long grass with the ball a good foot above his feet. He makes a decent connection... but it stays in the rough.

So close for Casey

June 16, 2017 1:05 AM

Casey comes within a whisker of six under at the 17th with a long-range putt that kisses the edge of the cup but won't fall.

Great sight

June 16, 2017 1:05 AM

Ah. Casey's early fireworks have been dampened a little by a bogey on the fourth - this despite an excellent recovery from that world-famous rough to be on the edge of the green in two.

More trouble for Rory

June 16, 2017 1:04 AM

What are the odds?

66 for Schauffele

June 16, 2017 1:03 AM

So close. It's just wide right from Schauffele at the last and he'll have to make do with a share of second overnight. But he'll be quite happy with that.

Bogey for Casey

June 16, 2017 1:02 AM

A bogey at the eighth has Scott back at four over and with an awful lot of work to do.

Birdie chance for Rose

June 16, 2017 1:02 AM

Paul Casey has given himself a big chance with an opening-round 66.'What perfect conditions and a perfectly conditioned golf course. I'm ecstatic. I've never started a US Open with a birdie, let alone an eagle,' he said.'I'm feeling really, really good about this golf course. It's not a classic but I like it.'

Garcia going backwards

June 16, 2017 1:01 AM

Day's struggles with the fourth continue. He misses his long, long putt for double bogey by quite a distance. Now a toughy for for a seven. In it goes. The less said about that the better, I would have thought. Day is chewing pretty furiously as he leaves the green.

It must be Love

June 16, 2017 1:01 AM

Things have quietened down a little after the birdie blitz of a couple of hours ago, and that might have something to do with the greens drying out further and firming up in the Wisconsin sun, and conditions becoming a tad trickier. There are also suggestions that the wind could be picking up, which will make things much tougher for the later starters... Rory McIlroy included.

Fowler completes his 65

June 16, 2017 1:01 AM

Reed goes long on the short 6th and can't get up and down, dropping him back to four under.

On the rise

June 16, 2017 1:01 AM

McIlroy sends his par putt at 15 an inch or two wide to the right, he misses the return and he slips to four over. Deary, deary.

This was rather good

June 16, 2017 1:00 AM

Jamie Lovemark, the 29-year-old American, has carded the best round of the day, a 69, after a long, swinging putt at the last.

Garcia bogeys 13

June 16, 2017 1:00 AM

Patrick Reed opened up with a four-under 68 today.'The biggest thing was staying patient. It's very easy when you see wide fairways to swing out of your shoes to get some extra yardage,' he said.'I think it's a great golf course. They can make it as hard as they want or as easy as they want, depending on where they put the tee boxes. But there's not a single hole you can fall asleep on because it will bite you.'

Leishman drops a shot

June 16, 2017 12:59 AM

Another birdie to end a round, this time Kevin Na. He's posted a very impressive 68 and sits four off Fowler.

Last chance for Xander

June 16, 2017 12:59 AM

Schauffele pops his tee shot on nine around 18 feet out and will have a putt to tie the lead at the very end of round one at Erin Hills.

Into the final stages

June 16, 2017 12:59 AM

Oh Sergio. No sooner had he picked up a shot, he's given it back. A bit of a mess made of the 13th, to be honest.

Casey slips up

June 16, 2017 12:58 AM

'I've only played one US Open before but you plan to play for pars and miss it in the right spots. You don't think too much of shooting a score.'This morning was the best conditions we're going to get all week. It was great to get it going.'

Schauffele birdies again

June 16, 2017 12:57 AM

Schauffele just about makes the green at the eighth and he'll have an arrow-straight putt from 20 feet or so to draw level with Fowler at the top of the leaderboard.

Weisberger birdie chance

June 16, 2017 12:56 AM

Weisberger dropped a shot at the eighth but his tee shot at nine leaves him with an excellent chance of making that back straight away. It'll be a putt from eight foot or so, slightly uphill.

Stuck in the grass

June 16, 2017 12:55 AM

They're flying in now - this time it's Paul Casey on the 1st, chipping in from nearly 100 feet!

Garcia birdies 12

June 16, 2017 12:55 AM

Has there ever been a more excellent trio of golfing names sat next to each other on a major leaderboard?Trey Mullinax - a qualifier - rolls in a birdie putt on the 15th to join Xander Schauffele and Maverick McNealy on two under.

Weisberger on the charge

June 16, 2017 12:55 AM

For those stats nuts among you, the two other men to hit six US Open birdies in a row are George Burns in 1982 and Andy Dillard in 1992.
