UK economy grows 0.6% in third quarter but slowdown seen ahead

Official figures show a pick-up from the hot summer but there are fears the year will end on a more downbeat note.

Early official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) pointed to hot summer weather boosting consumer spending and a good performance from trade.

But it said demand took a hit in September as temperatures cooled - with business investment contracting at the fastest pace since early 2016 as attention turned to uncertainties over the country's future trading relationship with the EU.
