Trade Minister Steven Ciobo will join his international counterparts in Tokyo on Sunday as the government moves to clinch a major regional trade agreement.

The talks hope to see Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations pool existing trade agreements to form a Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

"The RCEP negotiations send an important signal to the world that we are committed to opening new markets, free trade and the rules-based global trading system," Mr Ciobo said in a statement on Saturday.
