SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS creator Stephen Hillenburg has died at the age of 57 after being diagnosed with ALS, Nickelodeon have confirmed.
SpongeBob SquarePants was developed from concepts from an educational comic he produced while teaching marine biology, called The Intertidal Zone.
Fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the beloved star, with one tweeting: “Stephen Hillenburg wasn’t just the creator of SpongeBob. He was also a marine biologist and teacher. Stephen announced that he was diagnosed with ALS in March 2017.
“Today, he lost his battle. I hope that his bright energy, and love for the ocean, can shine on eternally.”
