Xavi has slammed Real Madrid by claiming they do not care about playing beautiful football like Barcelona.

The Santiago Bernabeu club won La Liga and the Champions League last season but they have been less successful this time out - they already trail leaders Barcelona by 16 points.

And while lauding his former side for their style of play, Xavi also claimed the 'culture' in Madrid meant there was no demand for aesthetically pleasing football.

'Barcelona is the final exam for a player,' Xavi said, as reported by Goal.

'It is the most difficult club and the most demanding in the world. Madrid do not play so beautifully. At the Bernabeu, if a defender hoofs the ball into the stand it is fine. That is the culture. The fans applaud.

The Al Sadd player also took time to criticise former Real manager Jose Mourinho's style of play and the impact it had on Real.

In the same interview, Xavi said it was 'embarrassing' that Ronaldo is compared to Lionel Messi and doubted some of Real's more lauded young players, like Isco and Marco Asensio.
