Reports in Spain claim Manchester City were ready to pay Lionel Messi £88m to leave Barcelona.
Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City did not launch a bid to sign Lionel Messi as a free agent - claiming the Argentine was never going to leave Barcelona.
Reports in Spain claim City owner Sheikh Mansour was ready to pay Messi a signing on fee of £88m to convince him to swap the Nou Camp for the Etihad.
But the five-time Balon d'Or winner ended speculation about his future by signing a new deal with the Catalan giants last month, which will keep him at the club until 2021.
City have long-hoped to lure him to the Premier League - with chief executive Ferran Soriano believing Guardiola's side would be his first choice if he ever left Barca.
Asked specifically about City's reported bid, Guardiola added: "It's not true."
