Commuters on Queensland's public transport system will soon be able to buy tickets using their phones, but the government cannot say when contactless payments will take effect.

A new system allowing commuters to use bank cards, phones and smart watches to pay for trips alongside the existing paper system will be rolled out by Go Card operator Cubic, Transport Minister Mark Bailey announced on Wednesday.

Budget papers show $371 million has been allocated for the overhaul, but no time frame set, Mr Bailey says.
