MORE migrants were intercepted by the Border Force overnight as criminal gangs made a Christmas Day bid to smuggle 40 people across the Channel.
The staggering numbers arriving in just one day follows more than 100 migrants rescued while attempting to cross the Channel in November and December before this week’s surge in attempted crossings.
Authorities spent the festive celebrations dealing with calls to five separate instances involving migrants presenting themselves as Iraqi, Iranian and Afghan on Tuesday (December 25).
Forty migrants, including children, had crossed the Channel towards Britain on Christmas Day led by people smugglers.
Border Force officials stepped up their efforts to tackle the criminal gang activities taking advantage of the Christian holiday with three more migrants intercepted overnight, a spokeswoman confirmed on Boxing Day.
