The M58 was initially closed between junctions 3 and 4, with Skelmersdale Police urging motorists to avoid the area. The closure was later extended to junction 5 after a second accident. Highways England said on Twitter: "The M58 is closed in both directions, J3 - J4, near Skelmersdale, while the emergency services deal with a serious collision. Early expectation is that the road is likely to remain closed for several hours."
They added in a seperate message: "If you are within closures on #M58 between J3 and J4, we are working to get lanes back on the eastbound carriageway.
"Westbound will remain closed into this afternoon, we have started turning vehicles around to send back towards J4 & pick up diversion route."
One motorist said on Twitter: "There’s been a horrendous accident on the M58. It’s closed in both directions between 3 and 4 for an air ambulance.
The North West Ambulance Service described the incident as “very serious” and said a teenager and a man in his sixties had been injured,
