A NEW European Parliament initiative to give young people free rail tickets has sparked fury on Twitter as users claim the scheme is simply an effort by the bloc to “bribe” Europe's youth.
Internet users are furious at the European Union’s executive branch's decision to hand out free rail tickets to 18-year-old Europeans.
The DiscoverEU initiative was approved in March when the European Parliament assigned €12 million (£10.5 million) for the project.
European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber, who originally proposed the scheme, said: “When we launched the idea to have a free Interrail ticket for every 18-year-old young European it was perceived as a crazy idea.
“Now we have the first 15,000 Interrail tickets established and they will be delivered this year but we have still to move forward.”
