Christopher Biggins, 69, was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’s seventh series, which saw him crowned the winner. The actor has now opened up about how his life has changed since the ITV programme, after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he admitted the health diagnosis has “opened his eyes” to the impact the disease has on people’s lives. He said: “When I was first diagnosed with diabetes that was what shocked me. “I mean, I would go to a restaurant and eat two baskets of bread before I’d even had a starter.”
The jungle favourite was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2010, three years after his appearance in the jungle.
However, he has admitted he is working towards making some major lifestyle changes.
Christopher said: “I'm 70 this year and I really want to get myself together for however many more years I've got left.
“I have started to eat much less recently and I don’t drink as much as I used to when I was younger. But I know I could do more.”
The actor is currently working with Novo Nordisk on the “Don’t miss a beat in type 2 diabetes” campaign, which launches today.
The aim is to raise awareness of people who are living with the disease and their families, highlighting the risks of cardiovascular disease, including the higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Christopher revealed it was only through Novo Nordisk that he became aware of the seriousness of the disease.
He said: “It is only this year through Nordisk that I’ve realised what the situation is. And now I’m trying to be as good as possible.”
