HURRICANE Florence has been downgraded to a category one storm according to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC).

Its maximum wind speed has fallen to 90 miles per hour though some gusts are higher.

It is currently heading northwest at approximately six miles per hour.

Hurricane force winds are extending outwards from the centre of the storm by 80 miles.

Florence is expected to start causing havoc over North and South Carolina today.

It will continue its westward journey into the United States on Saturday.

A storm surge of 10 feet has been reported in North Carolina by the National Weather Service office in Morehead City.

Despite the surge, a storm surge warning has been discontinued north of Duck in North Carolina.

According to the National Hurricane Centre: “Little change in strength is expected before Florence moves inland on Friday.

“More significant weakening is expected over the weekend and into early next week while Florence moves further inland.
