Glasgow plans remortgaging of iconic buildings to pay for equal pay claim

SOME of Scotland’s best-known landmarks could be remortgaged to pay a £500million council equal pay bill, it has emerged.

One of the contenders is the Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, otherwise known as the Emirates Arena, which was built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Tollcross International Swimming Centre, which also hosted 2014 events, and Scotstoun Stadium, home of Glasgow Warriors rugby union team, are also being considered.

SEC Ltd, which is majority-owned by the council, has the SSE Hydro, the Armadillo and a conference centre, and elements of the portfolio could be used to secure finance.
