THE Earth is at risk of being blasted by dangerous solar flares after a giant spot appeared on the sun.
The massive sunspot – called AR2665 – is already 19 times bigger than Earth and growing at an alarming rate.
And experts have warned that the spot is large enough to produce highly dangerous “M-class” solar flares.
They are capable of creating radiation storms, knocking out communication satellites and cause radio blackouts on Earth.
NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory first detected the huge spot last week and it appears to have lingered through to this week.
Sunspots are darker, cooler areas on the surface of the sun, caused by interactions with the star’s magnetic field.
