THE state funeral of former President George H W Bush is underway in Washington - but where will Mr Bush Senior be laid to rest and will it be with his wife Barbara?
World leaders and dignitaries are paying their respects to the 41st US President in a memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral, beginning at 4pm GMT (11am EST). Mr Bush Snr died at the age of 94 on Friday at his home in Houston, Texas. His coffin, draped in an American flag, was carried up steps into the cathedral moments before the ceremony’s start in front of hundreds of bystanders. All surviving former US presidents and their spouses are among those paying their respects, along with current US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump.
Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are all present.
Prince Charles and former British Prime Minister John Major, who was in office during Bush’s tenure, are also at the invite-only funeral.
Mr Bush’s body earlier arrived in transit from Capitol Rotunda, where he has lain in state since Monday night.
He will be buried alongside his wife Barbara, who died in April 2018, and his daughter Pauline 'Robin' Robinson Bush, who died aged three in 1953 after battling leukemia.
Today’s service is expected to be a unifying day when Republicans and Democrats cast aside their differences in honour of the late president.
