Gareth Mason killed Adam Stirrup at Heysham caravan park

A "jealous" man who cut the throat of his ex-girlfriend and murdered her new boyfriend at a Lancashire caravan park has been jailed.

Gareth Mason, 26, of Westminster Road, Morecambe, admitted murder and wounding with intent at Preston Crown Court.

He found Katrina Rudrum, 26, and Adam Stirrup, 28, after scouring caravan sites and attacked them in front of Mr Stirrup's daughter, the court heard.

He could not accept the end of his five-year relationship with Ms Rudrum, with whom he has a son, the court heard.

After discovering the couple's caravan at Stud Holme Farm Holiday Park in Heysham, he bombarded Ms Rudrum with phone calls and text messages, the last reading: "Are you ignoring me because you are with him?"

He claimed he returned with a knife to slash the caravan's tyres, but "lost it" when the couple came outside after hearing noises.

Bus driver Mr Stirrup died after suffering wounds to the chest, neck, face, arms and hands in two sustained assaults.

In between, Mason stabbed his former girlfriend in the chest and back before cutting her throat.

She shielded Mr Stirrup's 13-year-old daughter during the attacks, the court heard.

Mason had been sentenced to a community order in March 2012 after admitting two counts of battery against Miss Rudrum including strangulation, banging her head and dropping furniture on her.

Miss Rudrum "may never recover emotionally or psychologically", Detective Superintendent Paul Withers said.

He added: "Mason, motivated solely by the jealousy he felt that his former partner had started a new relationship, has left two families devastated by his actions."

In a statement Mr Stirrup's mother, Gail, said his family had been "devastated" by his loss and described him as a "good, honest and nice guy" who would "give anything to his family".
