GAME OF THRONES cast favourite Gwendoline Christie shocked those close to her when she accepted the part of Brienne of Tarth, she has admitted, ahead of the highly-anticipated season 8.
Gwendoline Christie, who has portrayed Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones since 2012, opened up about her friends’ reactions when it came to her most famous alter ego.
The 39-year-old said she identified with the warrior - the only daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth - created by George R. R. Martin.
Speaking in an interview in ES Magazine’s Fashion Edition, the actress opened up about what people really thought of her role and her contentment with being labelled an outsider.
The model commented: “The triumph of Brienne of Tarth was, [she says,] both professional and personal.”
Gwendoline continued: “I know how generic it sounds but it just was, in every sense of the word, incredible that that part should come along, made for me in a way that none of my friends would’ve identified for a second.
“They saw all of the fighting, the physicality, the fact that it was a character who was constantly being described as ugly.”
The Star Wars star went on: “None of the people who knew me could understand why I would want to play that part.”
She also stated that she is happy to be on the outside, and that it divides fans of the programme.
The film star said: “You either think I’m unconventional and there’s no place for me and therefore I should disappear, or you think good, I’m happy to be on the outside.
