Former Devon County councillor Peter Thorpe dies aged 90

Mr Thorpe proposed to his wife Jean just three weeks after they met in 1954

Mr Thorpe was married to his wife Jean for 62 years during which time they had five children, Carolyn, Alison, Sarah, Clive and Helen, along with 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Having grown up in Hounslow and been evacuated to Warminster, Peter sustained lifelong passions for the outdoors, sports, service and gardening.

After years as an Air Training Corps cadet, he served in the RAF from 1945 and 1949 and was one of the founding cohort of parachute jumping instructors in Chaklala, India.

Peter met Jean in Folkestone in 1954 and proposed within three weeks. Together they raised a family, found organisations, changed communities and travelled the world.

Peter joined Lloyds Bank in 1942 and retired as manager of the Exmouth branch 45 years later.

He served each community he lived in and was known locally for his level-headed and principled leadership.

Elected as Devon County councillor for the Exmouth ward in 1977 and 1981, Peter was also commodore of the Exe Sailing Club, treasurer of the Cranford Club, chair of the board of Rolle College, a member of the Round Table and the 41 Club and chairman of governors of Exmouth Community College.

His family said they wish to thank Dr T Wong, Dr A Hemsley and Dr W Tomlinson for their care, Marie Simpson's team of carers and West Bank District Nurses.

"Peter embraced life with optimism and humour, never losing the mischievous twinkle in his eye," added his family. "He will be remembered as an exceptionally kind and truly gentle gentleman."

The funeral service will be held at St Paul's Church in Starcross on November 30 at 12pm.
