He promised Brussels would respect the "constitutional integrity" of the UK, but suggested there would have to be checks on trade passing between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

These would only amount to scanning bar codes on lorries and ferries travelling between the two, Mr Barnier added.

Checks will also have to be carried out on all animals and food passing over the Northern Ireland border with the Republic of Ireland, up from the existing 10% quota, he said.

"I understand those checks are politically sensitive," Mr Barnier admitted, "but Brexit was the UK's choice - not the EU's".
