Family forced to live in tent after £6k rent debt

Gareth Agius, his partner Kay and their seven kids were booted out five weeks ago after unknowingly falling £6,000 behind in rent on their home.

They are now squeezing into a five man tent in the back garden of Kay’s mother after a mix-up over their benefits.

Gareth, who works at a soft drinks firm, says he is now at “rock bottom”.

The 26-year-old said: “I admit we have made mistakes and the system is very confusing but it doesn’t mean we should be living like this.

“I feel nervous and desperate. I am close to losing my job and have even thought about turning to drink, which I have never done before.”

Gareth, who is not the kids’ biological father, said he was being helped through the ordeal of being homeless by the strength of the youngsters.
