A Victorian woman with a developmental disorder who spent 18 months in custody despite being unfit to stand trial will have her circumstances investigated by the ombudsman.

The 39-year-old woman spent a year-and-a-half in prison waiting for her case to be finalised because suitable accommodation and community support couldn't be found, the Office of the Public Advocate revealed last year.

"We are investigating whether her conditions in prison were humane and met her complex needs, and whether appropriate steps were taken by authorities to find her more suitable accommodation," Victorian ombudsman Deborah Glass said on Monday.
