Crystal Palace 0 Southampton 1 RECAP: How Roy Hodgson lost first game in charge of Palace

CRYSTAL PALACE lost to Southampton in Roy Hodgson's first game in charge - here is how it happened.

But Steven Davis’ first-half strike is enough to seal all three points for Southampton and keep Palace rock-bottom of the Premier League.

You feel it’s going to be a long season for the Eagles and their new manager.

87 mins: Virgil van Dijk is on. The Dutchman replacing Oriel Romeu in a defensive-minded switch from Pellegrino.

It’s Van Dijk’s first appearance of the season after failing to get the move he wanted this summer.

78 mins: Crystal Palace have now gone 439 minutes without scoring a goal since the start of the season.

The record was previously held by Newcastle on 438 set during the 2005/06 campaign.

69 mins: Palace just seem like the ball will not go in for them, like there is some higher power at work forcing defeats upon them.

Saints haven’t been better than Palace today but they have certainly had the rub of the green.

I’m imaging him humming the song ‘Why does it always rain on me?” in his head.

59 mins: It’s now raining at Selhurst Park, but things are hotting up on the pitch.

Frustrations boil over on the touchline as Palace and Saints players hack away at each other.

Puncheon gets a talking to from the ref, he needs to be careful as he’s already on a booking.

The hosts are peppering Southampton’s goal, but two quickfire chances in the second-half are blocked.

First Loftus-Cheek went on another dangerous run, but his cut-back went begging.

Then Jason Puncheon should have scored but his tap-in was somehow blocked.

It’s not been a great game in truth and Roy Hodgson has plenty to do at the break.

Gary Lineker has summed up his views on the match by simply tweeting “Roy out.”

45 mins: Andros Townsend nearly scores at the near post, flashing a shot just wide of Forster.

But replays show the Saints keeper let it go and in truth it was always wide.

30 mins: Great effort by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who forces a fine save from Fraser Forster.

Loftus-Cheek dummied to shoot not once but twice but couldn’t find a way past Forster.

23 mins: Yohan Cabaye blazes a long-range effort over the bar, to jeers from the Saints fans.

Palace aren’t looking bad here, but they haven’t looked awful in most of their games this season - but they just can’t score a goal.

Hodgson must be thinking about changing it at half-time but he hasn’t really got any forwards on the bench, although Patrick van Aanholt is pretty attacking.

15 mins: Christian Benteke fluffs his lines when given the chance to put Palace level.
