JACOB REES-MOGG voted WITH Theresa May in a desperate attempt to avoid today’s shock Brexit defeat for the Government - because he knew it was the best chance at fighting for a hard, no-deal Brexit.
The European Research Group (ERG) chairman, who led a failed charge to depose the Prime Minister ahead of an expected defeat over her Brexit deal, told MPs he would be backing the Government.
As the Labour benches groaned in response, Mr Rees-Mogg sighed "we're not in pantomime season quite yet".
Cries of "oh yes we are" inevitably followed from the Labour benches and Mr Rees-Mogg was forced to admit defeat.
"I'm defeated on that particular point but not on the substantive one."
He added: "On these benches we must remember the great need for us when we are in power to defend the rights of Parliament for those occasions when we will not be."
