BARBARA WINDSOR is celebrating her 81st birthday today, her first since her husband Scott Mitchell revealed she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s back in May this year.
The former EastEnders star, who is widely known for playing feisty Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap, has received a flood of messages from her fans to mark her special day.
Allo' Allo' actress Vicki Michelle lead the birthday messages on Twitter.
She uploaded a snap of her and Dame Barbara beaming a smile for the camera in view of her 23,000 followers.
She wrote: “Wishing Dame Barbara Windsor a very #HappyBirthday today, hope you’re having a fab day Barbara. #CarryOn #Eastenders @LADYRATLINGS.”
One user penned: “Happy Birthday to our national treasure Barbara Windsor.”
A second commented: “Happy birthday to the one and only Dame Barbara Windsor.”
Earlier this year, Dame Barbara’s husband of 18 years Scott, 55, revealed she was suffering from Alzheimer’s and said she was diagnosed with the disease in 2014.
In a candid interview with The Sun, he revealed his wife “broke down” when she learned the news.
He said: “When the doctor told us, she began crying then held it back, stretched her hands out to me and mouthed, ‘I’m so sorry’.
Dame Barbara’s spouse said he decided to speak out about her diagnosis as it had become difficult to hide and he wanted to raise awareness for others.
